Stopping the water
Isolating the failed section so the rest of the house can go back into service. Sometimes that is one fixture valve, sometimes the whole main, depending on where the break sits.
A pipe that has let go can put a lot of water through a house in a few minutes. Shut the supply off if you can do it safely, then call Prescott Emergency Plumber to reach an independent plumber who can find the break, stop the loss and repair the line properly.
If water is still coming out, stopping it comes first. Most homes here have a shutoff where the supply line enters the building, often near the water heater, a softener loop or an exterior wall, and town properties also have a valve in the meter box near the street. On a well system, the pressure tank and the breaker for the pump are the equivalent. Turn off the water heater's gas control or breaker too, but only if you can reach it easily and are not standing in water.

Not every call needs every item below. It helps to separate the emergency work that stops the water from the follow-up work you may want to plan for later.

Water travels along joists and inside wall cavities, so the wet spot rarely marks the pipe. The access hole gets cut where the failure is, not where the stain happens to show.
Copper, CPVC, PEX, polybutylene and old galvanized pipe all need different fittings and methods. If the same run has failed more than once, replacing it usually beats repairing it again.
The repair should be pressurized and checked before the water goes back on for good; ask to be shown what was replaced and where your shutoff valves are.
What drives the cost of a burst pipe repair is where the pipe is and what it is made of. A split under a sink is an easy reach. A line in a crawl space, an exterior wall or a concrete floor is not. Old galvanized supply lines that have corroded from the inside are often better replaced along a whole run than repaired at one point, because the next failure is usually already forming a few feet away. Ask for the options and the price before anything is cut open.
Freeze damage is its own category at this elevation. Prescott winters reach hose bibs, crawl spaces, unheated utility rooms and any pipe run along an outside wall, and the worst cases are houses nobody was in: a cabin in Groom Creek or a part-time home that was left with the water on and the heat down. If a cold snap is why you are reading this, ask the plumber to point out the other exposed runs while they are on site, because those are next winter's candidates.
If the water loss was slow rather than sudden, leak detection is usually the right starting point, and a line failing inside a concrete floor is covered on our slab leak repair page. For the first ten minutes step by step, read what to do when a pipe bursts, or get connected now.
Shut the water off at the main valve where the line enters the house, or at the meter box if you can reach it safely, move anything valuable off wet flooring and keep people away from water near outlets or appliances. Do not try to open a pressurized pipe yourself. Call Prescott Emergency Plumber to be connected with an independent plumber.
The pipe material, how deep in the structure it sits and how much has to be opened to reach it. A split under a sink is a short job; a line inside a slab or behind finished stonework is not. Ask the independent plumber for the price once the break has been located, and decide before any work begins.
Many burst pipe repairs are handled on the first visit, because the priority is stopping the water and getting the house usable again. Work beyond that, such as replacing a whole corroded run or repairing drywall, is often scheduled separately. Ask the provider which category yours falls into before work starts.
Age and corrosion cause plenty of failures on their own, and polybutylene supply lines installed in homes from the 1980s and early 1990s become brittle and split without any help from the weather. High pressure, a failed fitting or a pipe rubbing on a joist for years will all do it too. See the full list of plumbing services if you are not sure what you are dealing with.
Call now to be connected with an independent plumber, and shut the water off if it is safe.
