Getting flow back first
Cabling or jetting the main line through the cleanout relieves the backup so the house is usable again, before anyone talks about digging anything up.
When toilets back up, tubs fill and a floor drain overflows all at once, the trouble is past the fixtures and out on the main line. An independent plumber can clear it, put a camera down to show you the cause, and quote the repair if the pipe itself needs work.
Stop using water in the house until it has been looked at, including the washing machine and the dishwasher, because everything you run has to go out the same line. Sewage is a health hazard: keep children and pets away, wear gloves if you have to move anything out of the water and do not try to open a cleanout that is under pressure.

A camera run shows what is actually in the pipe: roots at a joint, a collapsed section, a belly holding water, scale or a bad connection. You watch it with the plumber.
Where the camera finds damage, the position and depth are marked on the surface so any excavation is dug in the right place and no wider than it needs to be.
Spot repair of one failed section, replacement of a longer run, or clearing and scheduled maintenance where the pipe is still sound. Ask for the choices and the price before work starts.
Not every blocked main is a broken pipe. Plenty of them are roots that found a joint, grease from years of kitchen use, or wipes that never should have gone down. Those get cleared, and the camera tells you whether the pipe underneath is fine or living on borrowed time. Where a section has cracked, separated or collapsed, the choice is between opening the ground at that point and replacing a longer run, and depth, driveways, trees and rock in the ground all move that decision.
Around Prescott, the age of the pipe matters. Older properties near downtown may still have cast iron or clay out to the street, both of which open at the joints over decades and invite roots. Newer subdivisions have plastic pipe, which is far more tolerant but still suffers from bad slope, settlement and whatever gets flushed. Rural properties on acreage are a different case again: the house line runs to a septic tank, so a whole-house backup can be about the tank rather than the plumbing. Plumbers handle the house side up to that point, and septic tank or leach field service itself is a separate trade worth asking about when you call.
If only one fixture is affected, start with drain cleaning instead. The differences are set out in clogged drain or sewer line problem. Local access details are on our Chino Valley page, and you can get connected whenever you need one.
One slow fixture is almost always local to that fixture. Several fixtures backing up together, a toilet gurgling when another drain runs, or sewage appearing in the lowest drain in the house all point at the main line. An independent plumber can confirm it with a camera rather than guessing.
Yes, and they do not need a big break to do it. Roots follow moisture to a joint or a hairline crack and then grow inside the pipe where the conditions suit them. Cabling cuts them back; if the joint is already open, the pipe section is the real fix. See drain cleaning for the clearing side.
Only if the camera shows damage that cannot be cleared, and then only at the marked location. Many blockages end with the line clear and nothing excavated at all. Where digging is needed, ask for the position, the extent and the price before anyone starts.
Treat it as one. Sewage in the house is a health hazard and every further use of water makes it worse, so stop running water and call Prescott Emergency Plumber to be connected with an independent plumber. Read how a service call works for what happens next.
Call and say which fixtures are affected and whether anything has come up on the floor.
